About Curtain Call

Curtain Call - Theater, Community, Society (NGO)

Speaker of the Knesset’s Quality of Life Award for 2021, for promoting and encouraging patience, tolerance, honor, mutual understanding, and good neighborliness in education and practice.

Curtain Call, founded 2012  by Ifat Bahar, a meaningful role in building and maintaining social resilience in Israel  through community-based theater.

We do this by providing a stage for personal, group, and community empowerment and expression, as well as a platform for familiarity, connection, and dialogue among people from different backgrounds in Israeli society. We operate in over 65 groups in approximately 30 communities throughout the country.

All participants in our groups, including at-risk youth, Ethiopian immigrants, the elderly, people with disabilities, the ultra-Orthodox community, the Arab and Bedouin community, and families from impoverished and marginalized social circles, go through a theater process that strengthens self-confidence and a sense of capability to improve aspects of life such as family, employment, education, and community.

Each group creates an original performance that aims to raise social issues to the community discourse, challenge preconceptions, and strengthen the sense of community belonging.

Curtain Call goals for the coming years

  1. Transforming community-based theater into a cultural tool accessible to all, through which the community creates original performances and stands at the forefront of the stage.
  2. Turning community-based theater into a social and cultural tool with an impact model that can be measured and evaluated.
  3. Establishing the “Curtain Call” Center, which will serve as a hub for activities throughout the country. It will provide training for facilitators, workshops, and performances for groups, community meetings, and the Curtain Call Festival.
